parade, clover, march, holiday

Come celebrate the Emerald Isle and the strong and enduring Irish influence on American society with a March getaway to Hotel Zero Degrees Stamford, which will give you front-row seats for one of Connecticut’s great observances of Saint Patrick’s Day.

The Stamford Saint Patrick’s Day Parade

On Saturday, March 2nd—a couple of weekends prior to Saint Patrick’s Day proper, mind you—the city of Stamford brings out the green in full force for its long-running Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. This merry and well-attended procession steps off at Hoyt and Summer streets, proceeds south to Main, where it turns east to follow Atlantic and Bedford streets up to a North Street finish line. You’ll have no shortage of good downtown perches for some street side viewing!

The Grand Marshal for this year’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is Stamford’s Polly O’Brien Morrow, the vice president of the Pitney Bowes Foundation and Pitney Bowes Relief Fund as well as the company’s program manager for global corporate citizenship and philanthropy.

Incidentally, if you’re interested in continuing the festivities at an Irish pub on the heels of the parade, you’ll certainly find no shortage of those here in town, from Bennigan’s and Tigin to Castle Bar & Grill, Fiddler’s Green, and McFadden’s.

Stamford, CT’s Irish Heritage

Irish immigrants played an important role in the early history of Stamford, as the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade’s website notes: They helped construct its canals and railroads and worked in its mills, literally helping build the foundation of the modern city. An 1860 census reveals the significance of the Irish community here: At that point, nearly 30 percent of Stamford’s adult male population originally hailed from Ireland. Early Irish neighborhoods in Stamford included “Dublin,” “Kerry-town,” and “Hoytville.”

Today, the city’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade honors that specific local heritage as well as the larger Irish-American community—and, of course, the faraway island boasting such rich and influential culture.
