With Turkey Day freshly behind us and the Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanzaa/New Year’s/etc. festivities looming all merry and twinkling on the horizon, we’re officially in the thick of the holiday season.
Now’s a great time to declare a family getaway to Danbury, Connecticut. With elegant, comfortable, and amenity-stacked accommodations at Hotel Zero Degrees, you’re all set for squeezing in some holiday shopping and soaking up the festive atmosphere that’s already taken hold in our fair little city.
Not a little of that festive atmosphere is owed to a new Danbury tradition getting underway right now: the 2nd Annual Downtown Danbury Holiday Decorating Contest!
Enjoy Creative Storefront Displays During the Downtown Danbury Holiday Decorating Contest
A whole cadre of local businesses and landlords pull out the stops for this citywide celebration, decking out their storefronts and building facades in eye-catching seasonal (and non-denominational) flair. Creativity runs rampant on doorways and windows and signs, and locals and visitors alike get to stroll about in a genuine winter wonderland courtesy of the imaginations and artistic talents of Danbury’s commercial community.
The Downtown Danbury Holiday Decorating Contest: How It Works
To be eligible for the Downtown Danbury Holiday Decorating Contest, business displays must be ready for viewing by December 1st, and must be visible from the sidewalk. On December 13th, a trio of judges—Danbury’s mayor (Mark Boughton), a local radio host (Lou Milano), and one of the editors of The News-Times (Jacqueline Smith)—will assess the holiday decorations to determine the best of the bunch.
The first-place display lands $500; second and third place receive $250 and $125, respectively. There’s a People’s Choice Award granted as well, the recipient of which gets $250. Last year Danbury Hackerspace took top honors, with Nico’s Pizza & Pasta taking second place and Danbury Grassroots Academy and Tailoring & Alterations by Irene Rocha splitting third.
